1. What do you mean by Research? Examine its significance in social and business sciences.
2. List out the sources from which research problems are identified. And also discuss the process of identification of a research problem.
3. What is sampling? Describe the various probability sampling techniques with examples.
4. Evaluate interviewing as a method of data collection.
5. Distinguish between quantitative and qualitative analysis.
6. Describe the importance of multivariate data analysis in the context plurality of independent variables.
7. State the importance of documentation and describe modes for documenting sources.
8. Distinguish between
(a) a technical report and a popular report
(b) an interim report and a summary report
(c) a research abstract and a research article
(d) a topic outline and a sentence outline.

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY II — TECHNIQUES
Time : Three hours

Answer any FIVE questions.
All questions carry equal marks.
1. (a) What does a measure of central tendency indicate? Describe the important measures of central tendency pointing out the situation when one measure is considered relatively appropriate in comparison to other measures. (10)
(b) Find the standard deviation and the coefficient of variation for the following frequency distribution and clearly state the fundamental difference between these two measures of variation:(10)

2. (a) Explain the measures of relative skewness. (10)
(b) Calculate the Pearson's coefficient of skewness based on mean and mode from the following information. (10)

3. (a) Write short notes on association of attributes. (10)
(b) Calculate Karl Pearson's coefficient of correlation between expenditure on advertising and sales from the data given below : (10)

Sales in (lakh Rs.) : 47 53 58 86 62 68 60 91 51 84
4. (a) The procedure of testing hypothesis requires a researcher to adopt several steps. Describe in brief all such steps. (10)
(b) In a test given to two groups of students, the marks obtained were as follows : (10)
First group : 18 20 36 50 49 36 34
Second group : 29 28 26 35 30 44 46
Examine the significance of difference between mean marks obtained by students of the above two groups. Test at five percent level of significance.
5. (a) Distinguish between parametric and non-parametric tests. (10)
(b) Two random samples drawn from two normal populations are : (10)
Sample 1 : 20 16 26 27 23 22 18 24 25 19
Sample 2 : 27 33 42 35 32 34 38 28 41 43 30 37
Test using variance ratio at 5% and 1% level of significance whether the two populations have the same variances.
6. (a) What is chi-square test? Explain its significance in statistical analysis. (10)
(b) A research study shows that the incomes of a random sample of 6 junior engineers in industry A are Rs. 630, 650, 680, 690, 710 and 720 per month. The same study shows that the incomes of a random sample 10 junior engineers in industry B are Rs. 610, 620, 650, 660, 690, 700, 710, 720 and 730 per month. Do you find any significant difference in the incomes of the junior engineers in industries A and B? use t-test to answer the questions. (10)
